About this book:

  “Wife. Warrior. Lady of Two Worlds.

    As War Looms, Will Her Power Be Enough to Save the Ones She Loves?

    Working together, the Great Houses come up with a plan to secure the borders from the approaching Dominia Empire. My personal Rating-

I can see why this is a popular series, as the plot is very unique and interesting. I think the bottom line, though, for me, is that I’m not the right reader and not a fan of certain parts that I mentioned in my review of the second book. I do have to say, this trilogy has been an adventure and I’ve enjoyed seeing what would happen next. Had there not been a fade-to-black scene in the second book, I would have kept this series in my bookshelves. (Side note: If you loved the whole “River of Time” series by Lisa T. Bergren, you would most likely be completely okay with how it’s handled in this book.)

I like Selene a lot more in this book. She’s more confident and well-spoken. I actually wasn’t a fan of seeing Lady Ragna having doubts…I kind of just wanted her to always be evil? That’s probably terrible to say, but her doubting her goals makes her feel wishy-washy, which she was not that way at all in the prior books. However, I was very satisfied by the ending.

This fantasy trilogy has been a journey and I’m glad that I finally read it and can mark it off of my TBR. It definitely had its good points and not-so-good points in my eyes, but overall, I can see why so many love it. Older girl who are big fantasy fans would probably enjoy this series the most.

Spiritual Content- A couple of Scriptures are mentioned & quoted; Prayers & Thanking God; Talks about God, His reasons for things that happen, & a couple discusses their spiritual welfare; 'H's are capital when referring to God; It’s said the one of the hired hands on the ranch doesn’t depend much on prayer and another tells him that he doesn’t have any guarantees on how long he’ll live (so he should get seriously about God; he tells the other man to keep praying for him and he’ll be safe; The man was upset that their prayers didn’t help heal a child, but prays for another child who is possibly in trouble); The new mother realizes that she wants to get closer to God to be able to depend on Him more & discusses it with her husband; Mentions of God, trusting Him, & faiths; Mentions of prayers, praying, & blessings over food; Mentions of churches, church going, services, hymns, preachers, & Sunday school lessons; Mentions of Christians & Christian duties (one man says that another man may be religious, but he doesn’t see eye to eye with him on the Christian part as he thinks that being a Christian should improve your disposition and hasn’t for the other man); Mentions of a Christian children’s home; Mentions of a Christmas celebration & the first Christmas; A few mentions of those & events in the Bible; A mention of missionaries.

             *Note: In the Cooper kids’ new family, there is a daughter who was adopted with another little boy, but when the boy passed away, she’s been after her parents to get “another boy to replace [him]”; Some others tell the family to send back the children if they can’t handle it; There are quite a few prejudice comments about orphans (including someone not wanting to believe a boy is innocent from a crime); Ethan is asked why he and Alice do not call their new parents mom and dad and he says “I kinda feel like they aren’t really being our parents. They’re just keeping us.” (towards the beginning); There’s some sibling bickering and one of the boys comments that “it’s no use trying to tell a girl anything”; A few comments from the hired help for a family complaining about a family adopting (because it will be more work for them); A few mentions of some Indians not liking white folks because of the government pushing them onto the reservations; A mention of the children becoming as “brown as the Indians” due to them playing in the sun.

My personal Rating-

{Could possibly be triggering for adoptees}

I was actually incredibly nervous going into this book because the prior book didn’t set up their new family as the best with comments about the dad being stoic, the mom being flighty, and the daughter being spoiled and bratty (paraphrasing here, but that’s what I recall gathering about them). Thankfully they weren’t too bad, in reality, and there’s character development for the parents. Though my heart wished it had been more of a sweet welcoming for the kids with everything they’ve been through.

"Enhanced" by Candace Kade

About this book:

  “Lee Urban is living a lie.
    In a society where everyone's DNA determines their destiny, being a Natural means automatic relegation to the gritty and dangerous Outskirts. With the harnessed power of gene-editing, the ability to create a super-human race has transformed the world and offered the opportunity of a genetically enhanced life. But only to those who can afford it.
    Born a Natural, Lee Urban was adopted into the Enhanced high society of the Asian Federation and forced to conceal her genetic roots. When her dream of attending Peking University becomes a reality, she is determined to go despite a warning from a mysterious source.
    Targeted by a hacker bent on exposing her true DNA, Urban faces off with an Artificial Intelligence Game that puts her—and her lies—to the test. What was supposed to be a dream come true turns into a lethal gamble of hide-and-seek with her genetics. Can Urban continue the act, or will the cracks in her story expose her and endanger her family?”

My personal Rating-

{Please note the lack of Christian content & Mentions of evolution and take that in account of

the ratings.}

Ever since I saw the details of this cover and heard it was a dystopian story, I instantly added to it my TBR.

Before I get into the details of things I liked and didn’t, let’s first note that there’s no Christian content in this book. It’s possible that a later book could introduce that element, but for this book: There was no faith content. I only review Christian Fiction on BFCG, so this puts me into a slightly awkward position because Enclave publishing is very popular in the Christian Sci-Fi/Fantasy industry and that Goodreads has this book listed as Christian Fiction. I ran into a similar dilemma with “Swift” a couple months ago that was also published by this publishing house. “Do I review it on BFCG or not?” I went back and forth on that book and now this one as well. Only because Enclaved Publishing is well-known by those in the Christian book community will their books be reviewed on here. So far, of the books I’ve read by them, some have no faith content and some have an allegory thread. It’s hard to rate this book because there’s no faith content and mentions of evolution-based ideas.

When I first started this book, I felt very thrown into the world and lost. Rather than a telling about the technology or the world, it’s more of a learning as you go, so it took a bit to be able to figure what everything was. Once I was able to get answers and figure things out, I found the world interesting. I just wasn’t the biggest fan of evolution-based comments or Urban herself. I think I did also find a plot hole (an important event being said to be a couple weeks away but then a few chapters and a few weeks later, it’s in two days).

Urban was super aware of her secret, and always wondering if others could figure out her secret or find out who she really was, which honestly did get on my nerves. I’m not sure whether she had major character development by the end or I just got used to her, but Urban bothered me less by the end of the book. I think the world and setting of was really different and interesting in this book, but there were different parts that pulled me out of the story and it just didn’t fully click with me.

Those who are Enhanced kind of feel like superheroes, but they don’t have the expectations to have to help people. Most are selfish, vain, and rude to others instead.

I did have to pause reading halfway through and make some fried dumplings because of all the food descriptions! Most books have mentions of sweets or desserts and since those don’t interest me at all, it was really funny for me to get a craving for a food because of a book! I did really like the Asia setting and found those parts to be the most interesting.

I found the big competition parts (called The Games) to be boring and kind of cheesy. I was lost on a lot of the action scenes…I’m honestly not sure if it was me or the writing style.
Would I read the second book? Hmm. Maybe. While this book didn’t end on a major cliffhanger, there’s still a lot to be explained and happen, but I know I would have to reread this first book before picking up the sequel. Which I don’t think I enjoyed this book enough to do, but perhaps, if the second book really interested me.

About this book:

  “The Perfect Way to Spend the Next Hundred Days. . .
   The 100-Day Devotional for Girls offers relatable, real-life wisdom and inspiration for everyday living. With topics like Kindness, Friendship, Serving, Patience, Love, Joy, Courage, and more, girls will be encouraged to grow in their faith and spend regular time in the heavenly Father's presence. Each devotional reading is complemented by a brief scripture selection and short prayer-starter. The 100-Day Devotional for Girls is the perfect place for girls to spend their next hundred days!”

Series: No. A stand-alone devotional.

Spiritual Content- Each devotional has a write-up, a Scripture, and then a prayer starter;  'H's are capital when referring to God; One devotional explains who Jesus is and what He did for us (including the fact that those who trusted in Jesus and asked for forgiveness from their sins will be forgiven); All about many talks about & many mentions of God, Jesus, His plans for us, & trusting Him; Many mentions of those & events in the Bible (a few devotionals recap different events like Jesus dying on the cross, Esther, David & Goliath, Job, Solomon, etc.); Mentions of the Holy Spirit; Mentions of Bibles & Bible reading; Mentions of prayers, praying, & worshiping Him; Mentions of Heaven; Mentions of missionaries; Mentions of having godly role models; Mentions of sin; A few mentions of miracles; A few mentions of churches, church going, hymns, & pastors; A few mentions of blessings; A mention of an angel coming to see Mary;
             *Note: Mentions of the devil and his lies; Mentions of gold idols and false gods in the Bible; Mentions of imaginary gods and goddesses like Mother Earth, people who worship the sun, moon, and stars, & those who say certain types of animals are holy (the author disagrees with these and says that all of that is very displeasing to God).

Negative Content- Mentions of lies, lying, & liars (and that God expects you to tell the truth, this part is added: “The only time He might be accepting of a lie is if you are in danger and a lie will help to save your life or keep you safe. Hopefully that will never happen to you.”); Mentions of jealousy; A handful of mentions of bullies, mean teasing, & hatred; A handful of mentions of gossip & rumors; A few mentions of deaths (in the Bible); A few mentions of swear words not being pleasing to God, especially if those words use God or Jesus’ name; A few mentions of cheating on homework; A couple mentions of animals being killed (in the Bible); A mention of seeing a fire or a crime; A mention of Jesus turning water in wine; A mention of eye rolling;
             *Note: Mentions of silencing the little voice that says you aren’t good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, or strong enough and instead listening to God’s voice (quite a few other examples of what the father of lies says and what God says about it).

Sexual Content- One devotional talks about feeling butterflies and how sometimes it’s when going to a new place or doing a new thing, you may have them. But, it adds, if you avoid anything that starts that feeling, you could miss out on some cool new experiences such as never meeting your best friend or “when you get older, the man you would marry”and that if you forever ignore that feeling “you would end up miserable and alone”; Another devotion talks about Proverbs 31 and says about when the girl is a bit older and begins dating, her mom might give her wide advice about focusing on a boy’s heart and not his looks, it’s added towards the end of the devotional that “dating godly boys will lead you one day to the godly man you will marry”; A mention of a couple in the Bible dating and that “their like for one another soon turned into love, and they got married” (Ruth & Boaz); A mention of the “kissy, lovey kind of romantic love husbands and wives share”; A mention of when you “marry your Prince Charming, you might move away with him to a different city or state”.

My personal Rating-

There’s a lot of recapping different events from the Bible, which can be nice for younger readers, but I do wish at least where it was in the Bible would have been listed. Having the events summarized, though, does make it more accessible for those who maybe haven’t heard about them or haven’t grown up in a Christian home.

There’s some mentions of school settings and popularity, but not enough that I would think this devotional would only be good for girls in public or private school.

While this isn’t my personal favorite pre-teen devotional, it’s still a pretty good one that I think would be good as a first or second devotional for the age range of 8-12.

Overall, this was a sweet little devotional that I can see many young girls enjoying.
