That was so interesting!
I haven’t read many superhero/superpower
books—especially not ones that have faith content. Which I think made this book
more special to me because I was so curious on how the author would create a
world with superpowers and also have God in it. So while the faith content was on
the lighter side, it was still really neat seeing the message of “God doesn’t
make mistakes” on a superhero/superpower scale.
(Note: For those concerned and/or
wondering: There is no magic in this book, nor the use of that word. Those with
superpowers discover them when they are a child (born with it) or, in Scarlett’s
case, are attacked by a “super” (a person with superpowers). Some think that
superpowers are a dangerous defect, but other believe them to be a gift from
God.)
This book was so different from
what I’ve read before and I really enjoyed that. It definitely wasn’t the
typical YA novel—for one, there’s no (NO!) romance or such in this! (Can you
hear my happiness in that statement??) There were a few other elements that
made it different from all the YA novels out there that really added to my enjoyment
and I found it refreshing. It was slower paced than I was expecting, but I
never felt like it dragged on.
There was a lot of different parts
that I really enjoyed in this book. I definitely plan on reading the second book
of this duology when it releases as I’m so curious on what will happen next,
but also thankful that this one didn’t end in a cliffhanger!
