“Phooey Kerflooey is afraid of the dark. At Camp Castle Pine, the lights go off with the generator and the world is blanketed in darkness. After her boys read a Bible story about Pharaoh, some plagues, and The Destroyer (who seems a lot like the Angel of Death) Phooey is horrified. This Bible story is much too scary! Things are bad enough when the dark only happens after everyone goes to bed. But the camp’s generator breaks, and the darkness stays all night long. This is darkness that “can be felt,” just like in the Bible! When a frog hops on her tail and a grasshopper jumps on her head, Phooey is sure the plagues are coming again! The Angel of Death has killed the generator and now he’s coming for Phooey and her boys! Phooey Kerflooey must battle Pharaoh’s Evil Electrician and fix the generator herself, before it’s too late!
Theme John 8:12—Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
Series: Book #3 in the “Phooey Tales: Spring” series. Reviews of Book #1 and Book #2 Here! Parts from the previous books in this series are also covered in the book “Phooey Kerflooey” (aimed for slightly older readers).
Spiritual Content- Exodus 10:21, John 8:12, and John 1:29 at the beginning; Scriptures are read, mentioned, & recapped; Talks about Moses, the Pharaoh, and God fighting for His people; ‘H’s are not capital when referring to God; Phooey’s boys read to her about the Pharaoh and the plagues; Phooey is scared hearing about the evil Pharaoh and the “Angel of Death” (which Marcus tries to correct his brother that God really said that it would be a “destroyer”, but Conner has already drawn his comic about it (sharing it has “black wings and [a] barbed-wire halo”); Later, Marcus tells Conner again that it wasn’t an Angel of Death, but God fighting for His people, so Conner alters his drawing to have a name-tag that says ‘God’ on it); After hearing this story, Phooey panics when a cricket and a frog land on her & thinks she’s doomed; When the power cuts off, Phooey is concerned that the “Angel of Death” could be coming for her and/or the people she loves & gets even more concerned when she drinks from a rusty faucet and the water is red (thinking it is blood); *Spoilers* Towards the end, Marcus reads Phooey two Scriptures about Jesus being the light and tells her she doesn’t have to be afraid of the dark *End of Spoilers*; Phooey wonders if God is with her in the darkness and feels strength at the thought; Mentions of God, Jesus, trusting Him, Jesus coming for everyone (even the grumpy and angry people), & shinning Jesus’ light for others to see; Mentions of Bibles, Bible stories, & those from the Bible; A mention of a prayer; A mention of someone Godsend;
*Note: Phooey trembles when she thinks that Pharaoh’s evil magicians are coming to the camp & calls an electrician an “evil electrician” because she thinks he is damaging the camp’s generator to leave them in the darkness; *Spoilers* At the end, Phooey starts to think that perhaps the “evil electrician” wasn’t as evil as he had seemed at first and she helps him find a missing piece to the generator *End of Spoilers*; Mentions of the Pharaoh’s “evil magicians” (also called a wizard) who battled against Moses in the Bible.
Negative Content- Minor cussing including: A bit of eye rolling; Some pain & falling out of a window into a thorn bush (barely-above-not-detailed); Phooey is scared of the dark and forest animals (she thinks that wearing ear bows will make her braver); Phooey jumps in the electrician’s van to steal his tools and ends up being taken down the road when she gets locked in it; In his comic of the Bible story, Conner has drawn the riverbanks with dead cows and donkeys near it (no details) & also an image of the Pharaoh stealing candy from a baby and ordering a cute hamster into the river (to show what a bad guy he is); A mention of blood; A mention of a lie;
*Note: Conner says Shakespearean insults (towards Phooey when chasing her; This hurts Phooey because he usually only says those towards squirrels); Phooey is given a little bowl of popcorn to eat, some french fries with toppings (cheese cause, bacon, and sour cream), & a cool-down cup of mint tea.

My personal Rating-
Oh, poor Phooey! After hearing Marcus and Conner read about the evil Pharaoh in the Bible and all the plagues—plus seeing Conner’s comic book drawing of it—she becomes very afraid of the dark and that the Angel of Death will visit while the camp is plunged into darkness due to a generator error. She believes it’s up to her to save those she loves, but that causes some trouble too! I liked how the faith content worked into the plot and how Phooey has to learn that God is with her even in the darkness.
