My personal Rating-

This final book is set two years after the prior book and I’ve so been looking forward to reading Ruth & Frank’s story! Frank is such a good guy. He’s fantastic in the prior books, but he really shines in this book. A male lead that encourages the main girl in her faith is something I always love to see. I would have liked to see a bit more of him and his thoughts outside of Ruth and being a chef, but it was still really good to see more of them both.

There’s a slight mystery in this book, but we are quickly told who the culprit is in the story (by seeing their point of view). So rather than a “let’s find the culprit who’s stealing from the hotel” it’s a “let’s see how well our main characters do finding the culprit that’s stealing from the hotel”. I was a little bit disappointed that it was the second one, instead of the first, but I quickly got over that and wanted to see what would happen.

I will say that the con-man was so annoying! I do wish that that part was handled quicker, but it made sense at the end. The ending was a bit rushed and more telling than showing (which I’ve fussed about with other books), but it was still a good conclusion to the series. The faith content is what really made this series stand out and I appreciate how clean it was throughout the series. It would be a series I would have no problem recommending to girls around ages 14/15, depending on the girl.

"A Gem of Truth" by Kimberley Woodhouse

About this book:

“Julia Schultz has a reputation for being a storyteller--or as others see it, a liar. But with a dark and painful past, stories were all that kept her company and made her interesting to others. Longing for a fresh start and a second chance to earn real trust, Julia takes a job as a Harvey Girl at the El Tovar hotel, where she's challenged to be her true self.

Learning the trade of a master jeweler is hard work, but Christopher Miller takes pride in running his family's small shop and earning the respect of the people around him. But when he discovers that he has six weeks to buy his shop from his landlord before it is sold, he must find a way to save his grandfather's legacy.

United by the discovery of a legendary treasure, Chris and Julia find hope in each other. But when Julia's past catches up with her, doubt creeps into Chris's heart. Can he really trust her and her stories?”

My personal Rating-

This book had quite a bit of lessons!

Our main girl, Julia, oh, goodness. I felt really bad for her. All she wants is love—unconditional love—and to have others care about her. Julia’s childhood taught her that lying and coming up with stories about herself would make others interested in her. I was glad to see someone tell her that that isn’t how she should live very quickly on in the story because I don’t think I could have handled waiting for that discussion. Like in the first book, I do think that Julia’s change of believing happened a bit…not rushed because it was towards the end of the book, but perhaps sudden.

Chris was fine. A little too perfect at times, but they were cute together and this book reminded me of a book I probably would have loved as a tween/early teen. Clean, sweet romance, and a little bit of a mystery. It did few…juvenile at times, but that might be because of all the exclamation points and the writing style. I will overlook that easily though since it’s very clean with good lessons. So far, both this second book and the first book are ones I think ages 13-15 would really enjoy.

We see Ruth’s point of view more in this second book, so I’m looking forward to finally learning her story in the third and final book. This has been an interesting series so far. I think I enjoyed the first book a bit more, but this one was good too. I definitely plan on reading the third book (Ruth’s story) soon.

"A Deep Divide" by Kimberley Woodhouse

About this book:

“After being kidnapped as a child, heiress Emma Grace McMurray has seen firsthand the devastation that greed causes in the world, and she wants nothing to do with it--including her father's offering her hand in a business deal. She sneaks away to be a Harvey Girl at the El Tovar Grand Canyon Hotel, planning to stay hidden even if it means always looking over her shoulder.
Ray Watkins arrives at the hotel wanting to impress his father by finding success on his own. Then maybe he can take on more of the family business and do something good with the profits.
Ray immediately admires Emma Grace, and though a friendship forms, she's afraid he's just like every other wealthy man she's known. Then art and jewels go missing from El Tovar and the nearby Hopi House, a mystery that pulls them in and stirs up their worst fears. When shocking revelations come to light, they'll have to question all they thought to be true.”

My personal Rating-

It was completely predictable, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Especially when you want an interesting read that won’t tax your brain. It was a simpler plotline, but it was clean and something I would have probably really liked as a young teen. Set during my favorite time period, the romance was innocent, there was great faith content, and there was a bit of mystery/suspense at times.

Speaking of the faith content: it was really good. Even if I thought the change happened a bit fast in Emma Grace, I loved seeing that change and all the discussions and prayers. This was definitely one of the books that has the most faith content that I’ve read in the last few months. Another thing that makes this book stands out to me was how Ray prays about pursuing Emma Grace, I really liked seeing that and it was so sweet.

While the ending was very rushed, in my opinion, I’m actually okay with it. This was a simple read, but very enjoyable and just what I wanted right now. An easy four stars and I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.
