  “FBI Special Agent Lincoln St. John is living his own personal nightmare. When the woman he loves, Allison Radcliffe, is killed, he devotes his life to tracking down the killers and making them pay for their crimes. He expected it to be a challenge. What he never expected was to find Allison very much alive shortly after her "murder." As his anger and hurt mix with relief, Linc isn't sure how he's supposed to feel. This was an interesting and different Romantic Suspense novel!

Allie and Linc didn’t play by the book in their hunt of the bad guy—it was different though because of that and I liked that aspect—but because of them not playing by the rules of their FBI jobs, some parts felt unbelievable or like they would get fired so fast when it’s revealed what they’ve done. But it’s fiction, so, of course, it all works out. Because of them going on their own, though, they didn’t feel professional. Which I feel bad saying because I liked that it was different than the norm, but it felt off at the same time? Or is that because I’m unconsciously comparing it to the norm? Hmm, thoughts to ponder.

The pacing of this one was different. Linc finds out Allie is alive fairly quick at only 60 pages in—which is obviously good for his sake and we don’t see a lot of grieving on his part, but I didn’t know what would exactly happen next. I did call two of twists in the story early on and was honestly disappointed about it. I went back and forth not believing how they didn’t pick up on certain clues and trying to show them grace because of all the craziness that’s happening to them.

This book (really the last 30%) gave me anxiety. There were some poorly timed romance parts (kisses and confessions) throughout the book, but the romance parts overall still felt lighter than I was expecting. They both were very focused on their mission of catching the bad guy (more so Allie) which I liked. I would say it was probably 70/30 on the suspense/romance elements.

It looks like two of the St. John siblings, Ruthie and Derek, both have their own stories in novella collections, so I will have to check those out soon.

"Code of Valor" by Lynette Eason

About this book:

  “What Detective Brady St. John really needs is a relaxing vacation. Unfortunately, just as the sun is setting on his second day at a friend's cabin on Lake Henley, he hears a scream and races to rescue a woman from her would-be killer. When the killer escapes only to return to finish the job, Brady vows to utilize all of his many resources to keep her safe—and catch those who would see her dead.
    Financial crimes investigator Emily Chastain doesn't trust many people. And even though she let the detective who saved her life in on a few pertinent facts about why she was being attacked, there are some things you just don't share with a stranger. Little does she suspect that the secret she is keeping just might get them both killed.”

{ Add up to a full star for Older High School Teens interested in law enforcement }

I’ve been meaning to finish this series for years but never got around to doing it as they released. The concept of this series—a big family with almost everyone in law enforcement—is such a fun plot and I love seeing the siblings interact through the books.

That said, there has been some content that lower the ratings for girls in BFCG’s target range age and make this series better for older girls who are highly interested in law enforcement. There’s a lot of harder themes for far in this series and especially with this one because of things Emily has gone through and goes through in this book.

I will say that I had a hard time keeping tract with who everyone was and how they were connected. I read this book as a physical book, but also grabbed it off on Kindle Unlimited so I could search different names because I was lost at times.

I liked both Emily and Brady and enjoyed how they communicated and thought the romance wasn’t over-the-top or stealing the (suspense) show, which I appreciated. There were a few parts that were kind of gut-wrenching at times and added to the heaviness, but I will say that I really liked the faith content and discussions, especially towards the end of the book.

Because a serious case of human trafficking with connections to her missing cousin just landed in her lap.
  When US Marshall Blake MacCallum's daughter goes missing, he's ordered to kill the judge he's protecting and tell no one about his daughter's disappearance or she will die. My personal Rating-

{Not for young readers at all or those sensitive to human trafficking.}
Human trafficking is never easy to read about—and I’m of the opinion that we should never get used to hearing about it because it’s not right. It’s awful, horrendous evil that happens to too many people across the world.
Because of this major plot point, I was already a bit concerned reading this book after hearing about it in the first book. But, because I really do appreciate the fact that the author created a series about a family that truly loves each other and sees each other often, I decided to take a chance on this book. I will most likely end up finishing this series because of this reason.
All that said, I don’t think this was the author’s best. It was good, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as her past books (though, I will admit that could be completely because of the human trafficking) and I wasn’t really a big fan of Blake.
I do have my usual romantic suspense genre complaints of the random kisses in very un-romantic places (such as in the room connected to the room with two murdered bodies) and the typical suspense/mystery being wrapped up a little too quickly in the end.
There also were a couple parts that seemed obvious that I think a trained professional like Chloe would have picked up on. Whether I picked it up because I’ve taken classes in the criminal justice industry or it was a weaker plot point for the readers to guess what will happen next (and it’s most likely the second), it was disappointing that Chloe didn’t catch it. *Spoiler* Regarding the paintings with the numbers. It literally connects very easily in my mind of those paintings being sold and being paid for (therefore looking as a normal transaction in black and white), and then the girls being the “product” given. Makes me sick. *End of Spoiler*
One more thing to note is that the back-cover says that Chloe was dumped by her fiancé where as in the book (on page 28) it says they were dating and she thought they might be heading towards a lifetime commitment, but they were only dating.
Overall, this was not my favorite, but it does talk about an evil that is out there that people (who are old enough to be able to understand the horrors and not become scared or paranoid) need to be aware of for their own safety and for those around them.
