My personal Rating-

After reading a clean fiction retelling of the Wild Swans late last year, I was actually pretty excited for reading this one to see another author’s version of the tale. Like with the other one, this one has a fiercely loyal sibling set and that’s definitely want is making this retelling stand out to me.

I did feel like I was missing some background and context at the beginning of the book, like maybe Gwyn was a side character run a previous book by this author. I don’t see that anywhere, but maybe we’ll see more information in the bonus novella collection that will be collected to this series that is releasing next month.

Like with the some other books in this series, I do think this book could have been a bit longer there at the end, but I was overall invested in this story and really liked how the faith content played into the plotline. I’ve had other books by this author on my TBR and I’m more excited to read them now after finding this writing style to be easy and smooth to read.

My personal Rating-

I haven’t read too many books set around the Fourth of July, so it was really fun to have that element in this plot! Even if you aren’t American, this book just has a lovely summer feel to it that can be enjoyable without the nostalgic holiday events.

While I see bits of myself in RaeLyn, she did have a few moments that made me disappointed in her—particularly her negative thoughts about another character who is “down on his luck”, so to say, and thinking he is the vandal—that said, her thoughts could be accurate, however, because it’s sometimes hard to tell the vibe a person gives off over text rather than in person. I wish she hadn’t jumped to conclusions about him, though, especially as Mason was trying to help the guy. Everything works out and she learns a lesson about not judging a book by its cover, but I hope it sticks for the next book and maybe that she won’t jump to conclusions as much!

Speaking of Mason, after finishing the first book, I wasn’t sure what to think about him and was curious to see my thoughts on him after reading this book. The verdict? I liked him a lot more in this sequel. He balances RaeLyn out more as like I said above, she can be a bit quick to be judgmental and he is determined to see the best in everyone. I really liked the ending and can’t wait to read the next book after certain events happened in this book!

I might be a wee bit biased about enjoying this book so much—it is by one of my favorite authors, after all—but I also love the Scripture that is highlighted throughout the book, Psalm 68:6, about God setting the lonely in families.

Big, close families might have their messy moments and small town life might be messy with drama, but this series has highlighted it in a lot of humorous—and some thought provoking—ways. I would say I actually liked this book more than the first book in the series because I really liked how the ending worked out. I definitely suggest reading this series in order as it mentions the prior book’s events pretty often. Because of mentions of affairs/cheating, I would also suggest this series for older teens, but this one has less about that than the first book.

The ending had me doing happy sighs and then squeeing in delight—I’m truly looking forward to the third (and final!) book in the series that will be releasing in September!

"A Noble Assassin" by Abigail Kay Harris

About this book:

“How would you protect those you love from the wolf in sheep's clothing?
It was impossible to escape The Wolf for long. Stories of men captured and beaten were the only stories that spread of The Wolf. No one lived past the snap of his claws, or so was the gossip on trembling lips.
None were brave enough to risk the ire of the assassin who had survived as the king’s lapdog since childhood.
Sebastian Quilian was raised in terror.
Now a man or more a monster, The Wolf lived his life carrying out the tyrant king’s order—to assassination the former royal Bellatrixian king and the Salvador family line.
Born to long ago forgotten parents, Sebastian grew up in the charge of Cassius Salvador, under the old man’s thumb Sebastian realized young that he would never find freedom while Cassius lived.
Secrets grew upon secrets until he couldn’t breath and all that was left of the young, lost, little boy who once dreamed of home was The Wolf.
The Wolf knew that soon the past would catch up with him, yet he didn’t expect it to happen with the past to come in the form of death and those who held a blood given right to the throne, he knew that the past was now lost, but could he find hope in the future?
He couldn’t help but want to protect those he has come to love as he searches for a way to rise above his past sins and mistakes after finding the Truth.”

My personal Rating-

This book had such good potential! I was lost for a bit going into this book, but I eventually was able to follow along well enough, I think. I did have more than a few moments where I feel like I missed something (such as the romance—when did that happen??) It felt a little jumpy because of the flashbacks throughout the book, but I did really like the message that was shown of never being too far gone for God’s forgiveness. I think this book could have used at least another hundred pages to make the story flow better, but at its bare bones, it still had a good message.

"Serial Burn" by Lynette Eason

About this book:

“She's out for justice. But the arsonist she's tracking is out for retribution.
Now the fire marshal of Lake City, Jesslyn McCormick is determined to find the person who started the fire that robbed her of her family when she was just seven years old. As the twentieth anniversary of the tragedy approaches, a string of fires--including at Jesslyn's church--brings up all those old feelings and offers new evidence.
Because church fires are considered a hate crime, FBI Special Agent Nathan Carlisle is called in to work with local law enforcement. Nathan has his own past--one he'd prefer not to revisit. And focusing on helping Jesslyn track down the arsonist is a great distraction.
As both the case and the chemistry between Jesslyn and Nathan heat up, memories will come flooding in from the past to bump up against hopes for the future. And when Jesslyn comes face-to-face with her worst nightmare, she'll have to confront her fears and rely on Nathan and her community of friends in order to survive.”

My personal Rating-

After meeting Jesslyn in the prior books of this series, I’ve been looking forward to reading her story as soon as it released. Unfortunately, this book had some elements that kept me from really enjoying it.

Let’s first note that I would say that this series would be better to binge read because of the friend group and how they all meet and know each other happens in the first book. Which is nice because it’s not a classic “we’ve only known each other for three weeks and someone was shooting at us during that time but we’re in love anyway” plotline, but it also can feel lacking in “sparks” between the main couple’s first meeting or soon-after events. Because of this and the large friend group, I was lost at times and trying to remember what happened in the prior books to the prior couples. Binge reading this series back-to-back would probably cause better enjoyment of the series, I would imagine.

This book is actually connected to the author’s recently released novella “In the Dark” and that couple is mentioned in this book. I don’t think they were mentioned in the prior books of the series, but it’s been a while since I’ve read them, so I’m not sure.

“Serial Burn” struggled to keep my attention, unfortunately. It felt a little off at times to me? I think it was because the characters are talking in a very modern, around-my-age kind of way and it was throwing me. It almost felt unprofessional at times, but that sounds odd to say. I’m not sure if the author was trying to make these characters “hip with the times” (which I’m aware is *not* a current phrase) but that’s what it felt like to me, and a little heavy handed too.

I was bummed that I figured out the culprit pretty quick, around 50% in and even made a note then of my suspicions, which turned out to be broadly correct. It was messy, to say the least, and I didn’t really like it. It brought my rating down.

I could understand where Jesslyn was coming from in the way she was determined (some might say obsessed) with finding out who her family’s killer was. Which made some of the romance elements feel poorly timed (a complaint I often have with Romantic Suspense books) and then some sappy comments and conversations between her and Nathan had me rolling my eyes at times. By the end of the book, I still didn’t feel like I knew either of them outside of their childhood traumas.

Overall, I’m disappointed in this third book, but I still plan to read the fourth (and final?) book in the series when it releases.

"A Noble Companion" by Rachel Kovaciny

About this book:

“Raid a dragon's hoard for her dowry? It seemed like a good idea at the time...
Madelena isn't in love with her friend Armando, but his marriage proposal offers the security she needs. She sympathizes with him—his father insists Armando must either find a bride or join the army. Armando would rather become a husband than a soldier, but his ugly face has scared away all other eligible ladies despite his family's wealth. Although she harbors only friendship for Armando, Madelena agrees to marry him on one condition: she insists on acquiring a dowry worthy of his family's noble standing in the land of Costa Nueva. But as a humble stablemaid, Madelena has no idea how to find such wealth. That's when the talking burro Terco mentions he's heard how to find a dragon’s treasure.
Javier, Armando’s younger brother, has loved Madelena in silence for years. When he learns of their impending marriage, he offers to help her find the treasure, even though succeeding may cost him the chance to spend his future with her. Together, they face a dangerous wilderness, a charming bandit, and a dragon’s lair, forcing Javier to confront his feelings and Madelena to re-evaluate her heart.”

My personal Rating-

{ Those squeamish to blood/injuries might not enjoy scenes from this book, lower up to a full star for such readers. }

I have a new pitch for this book: Josefina American Girl Books + a little bit of Dora the Explorer with the quest for a dragon’s lair + the cutest unrequited love ðŸ¥¹ + talking animals (which I typically don’t like, but it worked so well for this book?) + a little Love Comes Softly for the Western setting and a scene towards the end = I was pretty flabbergasted about this one. Which is so funny to me because out of those elements, if someone tried to sell that pitch to me, only the unrequited love and smitten MMC (he’s been reading books and learning all he can about establishing a successful business so he can build a home with her one day—my heart!) would have attracted me to this story. But it worked so well despite it being so different for me, oddly enough.

I will say that I didn’t quite get The Ugly Duckling story? Javier’s brother is known to not be good-looking, but he was mostly mentioned, and we didn’t see him much so I thought it was strange that he would be the ugly duckling.

There were a few parts that made me squirm that had to do with blood and injuries and animals, just as a heads up for those sensitive to that element. I’m usually not in books, but there were more details that I was expecting in this one about all of that.

When I first started reading this book and saw the talking animals, I thought it was interesting, but not really my normal read. Which it wasn’t. At all. But it ended up being such a fun wild card, if you will, and one I will be thinking of fondly!
