"Rosa Takes a Chance" by Susan Martins Miller

About this book:

“Rosa Sanchez longs for a good education.
And the ten-year-old Texan takes a chance to pursuing her dream. But it won’t be easy. Mexican-American children of the 1930s face many obstacles to learning—from society’s attitudes about school for girls, to working in the fields to help their families, to the terrible, black-clouded storms of the “Dust Bowl.”
Even as Rosa’s family struggles to survive on the dry, windy plains, her spirit brightens when she meets people who want to teach as much as she wants to learn. But when her schoolteachers join the long line of families leaving Texas for the hope of a better life in California, how will Rosa move forward? Why would God put this dream deep in her heart if it isn’t going to happen?”

My personal Rating-
I don’t feel like I’ve read many books set in the Dust Bowl years, so this one was quite interesting to learn about. I loved Rosa’s passion for learning and how determined she was about school and just learning in general.

My personal Rating-
Rachel won me over when she started helping a new girl in her class (who speaks no English) by repeating different words multiple times and just spending time with her. When another girl teases Annalina, Rachel stands up for her and keeps trying to get everyone to be friendly to Annalina. Definitely my favorite of the series. :)
