"Flight" by Kristen Young

About this book:

  “On the cusp of graduation, Cadence is finally feeling in control. She’s about to become one of the prestigious Elites working in the Hall of Love. Plus, she can take her place as a full member of the underground Sirens who meet secretly in Love City. She’ll finally be able to use her memory skills for good, instead of reporting people as a Watcher.
    But a dangerous trap is set, throwing Cadence into unwelcome and unfamiliar territory. Someone in the Collective remembers things that could very well get her killed. The Muse is by her side, after all, but will she be protected when someone powerful wants her dead?
    Cadence just wants to be normal, free from politics or squad intimidation. Will she be able to achieve her Elite dreams, or will sinister forces leave her running for her life?”

My personal Rating-

I really wanted to like this third and final book in this series. I really did.

But I’m ending the book somewhat confused and feeling very jipped.

This dystopian series definitely isn’t the normal “let’s over throw the corrupt government” plotline that you see in so many dystopian series. It should be noted that I really like that plotline, personally. However, I wasn’t opposed to this one being different and I liked that it was overall different.

It’s been a couple months since I read the prior book, so it took me a while to catch up and remember past events and who everyone was. Once I remembered what was going on, it was nice to see certain characters again. I was quite lost though. Set three years after the ending of the second book, this book picks up with full speed and give only crumbs of details that happened in those three years. I feel jipped. I got to see none of the romance blooming between her and Hodge, and that’s just a jipped feeling for this YA clean romance fan.

Besides the feeling of trying to catch-up when reading, I was annoyed with Flick/Cadence at times for her reaction to someone reappearing. I totally get why she hated that person, but it felt like a very…juvenile problem for the current situation she was in.

“Flight” is a really good title for this. The ending was--like the rest of the series--different, but I didn’t hate it or feel upset. I just wish there had been more because I did feel a bit unsatisfied after the abrupt ending.

This trilogy could definitely be interesting for older readers who want something different than  the typical dystopian plotline, but it’s not a favorite of mine.

My personal Rating-

{Due to some suggestions (listed in the Sexual Content), the ratings are lower.}

Now this? This was the dystopian take-down-the-corrupt-government plotline I was looking forward to reading. The first book was mainly a lot of setting the stage of the world and characters, but this sequel was where the action happens.

I have so many thoughts, but I lot of them of spoilers, so I’ll be vague when I say I felt justified for my dislike for a certain character and was nearly screaming when it was revealed I was right.

Kerr acted a bit young at different parts, but I had to remind myself that she was basically brainwashed and never really hung out with the opposite gender, to excuse her reactions to different romantic/crush-like parts. On that note, though, there were a couple parts I was uncomfortable with such as Kerr and a guy going to a Love Hotel for a mission, and while nothing sexual happens between the two of them, there’s quite a bit of alluding to what happens at such a place. There are also hints of prostitutes and an official being attracted to minors that affected the ratings listed above. I would have happily given this book a higher rating had those parts not be in it.

There’s a ton more faith content in this sequel compared to the first, thanks to Kerr learning more and the certain group of people. There’s other names for God, Jesus, & the Holy Spirit (Composer, Lyric, & the Muse) but it’s all very obvious on Who they are talking about.

I was concerned that this one would end on a cliff-hanger, but a big thank you to the author that it didn’t! I’m still eager to read the next book, but I’m glad I’m not on the edge of a cliff waiting to read it. ;)

"Apprentice" by Kristen Young

About this book:

  “The Love Collective is everywhere. It sees everything. Be not afraid.
   Apprentice Flick remembers everything, except the first five years of her life. And for as long as she can remember, Flick has wanted to enter the Elite Academy - home to the best, brightest, and most loyal members of the Love Collective government.
   Flick's uncanny memory might get her there, too … even if it is the very thing that marks her as a freak. But frightening hallucinations start intruding into her days and threaten to bring down all she has worked so hard to accomplish. Why is she being hijacked by a stranger's nightmare over and over again?
   Moving to the Elite Academy could give Flick the future she's always wanted. But her search for truth may lead to a danger she cannot escape.

My personal Rating-

{Ratings are for content, but please note the lack of Christian content found in this first book.}

Dystopian books are my favorite type of story in the fantasy/sci-fi genre because rebelling against a corrupt government? I’m in.

So, I went into this book expecting that plot line. Well, it took the majority of the book to get to that element. The first half (150 pages) is really just setting the stage and giving a lot of context, therefore it felt very slow to me because of that. Also the…choices of the terms/names (like Love vs Hate, Haterman, the Supreme Lover and whatnot) pulled me out of the story in the beginning, to be honest, but I understand the concept. Once it picked up around page 200, I became much more involved in the story and last few chapters sold me on reading the next book and bumped my personal rating up from a 3 to a 3.5 star.

On Flick, we don’t really see her emotions, so I had a hard time connecting to or even caring about her. When we see glimpses of personality from Flick, they almost felt out of place to me since they were rare events. The change in her happened too suddenly, in my opinion, but I was excited to see the story picking up and hopefully see more of her character development in the second book.

While there is a parallel to Christianity (a couple mentions of someone named Lyric that implies Christ) in this story, it’s very light and I’m curious to see if there will be faith content in the next two books.
