{{This is an updated review. Originally posted March 23rd, 2015, it was updated on March 15th, 2025 to the Official Rating System.}}
About this book:

  “Miss Harriet Peabody dreams of the day she can open up a shop selling refashioned gowns to independent working women like herself. Unfortunately, when an errand for her millinery shop job goes sadly awry due to a difficult customer, she finds herself out of an income.
  Mr. Oliver Addleshaw is on the verge of his biggest business deal yet when he learns his potential partner prefers to deal with men who are settled down and wed. When Oliver witnesses his ex not-quite-fiance cause the hapless Harriet to lose her job, he tries to make it up to her by enlisting her help in making a good impression on his business partner.
  Harriet quickly finds her love of fashion can't make her fashionable. She'll never truly fit into Oliver's world, but just as she's ready to call off the fake relationship, fancy dinners, and elegant balls, a threat from her past forces both Oliver and Harriet to discover that love can come in the most surprising packages.”

2015 thoughts:
This was such a cute book! I’ve been looking forward to Jen Turano’s next book ever since finishing “A Match of Wits” back in July! Like the first book in the author’s debut series, I laughed many, many times! The only thing I wish there was more Spiritual content in “After a Fashion”, but I will continue with this series as the next books come out! (And hopefully there’ll be more Spiritual content!) :)

2025 reread:

After a trying day, I decided I wanted to reread a book that would make me laugh and give some joy—which is exactly what this delightful book did! I couldn’t remember much of what happened, so it was almost like reading it for the first time!

I do remember laughing so hard when I first read this book ten years ago, but it made me laugh again and again during this rereading! Harriet and Oliver’s banter and wit, but also with Harriet’s friend group with Millie and Lucetta. Reading it on Kindle this time, I easily highlighted over a hundred parts with all of those scenes and comments—which I will definitely be tabbing my physical copy as well. I’m looking forward to continuing with a reread of the rest of this trilogy soon!

See y’all on Wednesday with a new review!

{Girls who are interested in illnesses (MS, dementia, and diabetes) might rate this book higher}
This is not a happy book. It’s very real-life-ish and I read fiction for happy endings—which I understand isn’t always real life. This book just made me sad. With all the illnesses, funerals, and couples not staying together, I personally wasn’t a fan.

See y’all on Monday with a new review! :)

My personal Rating-

Out of the main three girls of this series, Bianca’s story & past makes me want to give her a hug the most! I liked “Lineage” the best out of the three released books—a major part of that was not so much Dizzy! Maybe by the fourth and final book she’ll be gone..? Here’s to hoping! ;)

"Hope Reborn" by Caryl McAdoo

About this book:

  “New York dime novelist May Meriwether decides a heroic Texas Ranger will make a great love interest for her new heroine. Bored to tears and loving adventure, she sets out to the Lone Star State with her constant companion and confidant Chester in tow.
  Dreams for a husband and children are relegated to the recesses of her heart, the self-confessed old maid deems it too late. But the near-perfect widower resurrects a smidgen of hope. Only his impenetrable, superstitious religious beliefs stand in the path to her falling head over heels, those and his love for his dead wife. Would there ever be room for her in his heart? And would he give up his fanaticism for God?
  An unexpected romance surprises both. Hope is reborn in God’s unfailing love and grace. Can a life built on lies find the Way to confession, forgiveness, and true joy? In a day when the church offers the only stability on the 1850 Texas prairie, these unlikely players find one another and fall in love. But will it be enough?”

**I want the record to show that I’ve talked with this author before (as she’s sent me some of her books to review) and she’s a very sweet lady but Miss Caryl, I’m sorry. This blog is not the right blog to promote your books. Please, don’t read the rest of these Final Thoughts—and you might not want me to read any more of your books. Thank you for the opportunity.

 There’s a lot of characters in this book—I had to make a family tree (and erase branches when I thought wrong)—and it’s just way too confusing. Can I just sum up the P.O.V. characters with one minor cuss word? Idiots! I’m sorry, but it’s true! May is such a ninny! I’m going to put a warning out there for Christian either new in their faith or not very strong, as May’s thoughts are very opinionated to the agnostic ways. She pulls out all the tricks of thinking like ‘why does a strong man need a crutch’, ‘how can anyone believe in something bigger’, ‘it’s like a club!’, etc. When she finally does get saved (20 pages till the end) it seemed too quick and not personal enough for someone who was anti-God just 300 pages earlier. (And I’m not saying this can’t happen, but it wasn’t believe in this book.) I was at a point of not finishing this book just because of the unyoked relationship between the May & Henry. Henry, 52 years old by the way, also fist fights a man named Bull. Ninny. Plus talks about his past of killing different men more than a bit. And later has a dream that I personally find unbelievable and had me rolling my eyes. Needless to say, the cliff-hanger for the next book does not interest me and I will not be reading about another fool.
